Openreach, an infrastructure subsidiary of BT Group, recently expanded its collaboration with Google Cloud to support faster fibre rollouts and progress towards sustainability goals by using AI.
Using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and BigQuery, Openreach will analyse fleet and network data with the aim of reducing emissions, improving operational efficiency and speeding broadband installations.
Google Cloud’s Vertex AI portfolio is used for building, deploying and managing AI agents and models. BigQuery is a fully managed, serverless enterprise data warehouse designed for large-scale analytics.
Key efforts include optimising Openreach’s 24,000 van fleet, which covers nearly 200 million miles annually, using the hyperscaler’s data tools to analyse routes, idling and fault patterns.
Google Cloud is also working with Openreach to accelerate electric vehicle deployment, a project which has already removed around 10,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.
The broadband infrastructure company is also using Google’s AI models to map 35 million homes and national transport corridors, allowing planners to identify where full fibre lines can be installed at a faster clip by building a digital twin of the transport corridors using Vertex AI.
Openreach is also using Gemini Enterprise to convert legacy queries into production BigQuery code, cutting time‑to‑insight by upwards of 50 per cent.
