UAE weather: Week-long summer rain forecast begins today as NCM predicts convective clouds

Dubai: Why is the sky looking overcast? It’s because summer rain is here to stay this week.

According to National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) – a low-pressure belt near the equator, where northeast and southeast trade winds meet – is currently advancing northward.

With rising temperatures and the influence of mountains in the eastern part of the country, local convective clouds are developing over eastern and southern regions, particularly in the afternoons. Once these clouds form, there is a strong chance of rainfall, of varying intensity, according to the NCM.

It’s why you can expect clouds in the sky, drizzle on your face, and petrichor – the pleasant, earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil.

Temperatures remain high

Despite the forecast for rainfall, especially in eastern regions, temperatures remain high today. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah hit 46°C today, in a trend that is expected to continue well into August, according to the NCM.
