Gargash says deterrence and diplomacy are complementary pillars for achieving stable and sustainable regional security

Abu Dhabi: His Excellency Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, said the meeting between His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit reflects the UAE’s approach based on the dual pillars of deterrence and diplomacy.

In a post on X, Gargash said the meeting, held as part of Sheikh Khaled’s engagements with leaders participating in the summit, embodied the UAE’s approach “as neither can stand without the other”.

He said deterrence strengthens the credibility of diplomacy, while diplomacy succeeds when it is based on parity and capability, ultimately forming “the optimal path toward achieving stable and sustainable regional security”.

Gargash added that President Pezeshkian had expressed positions and statements during the prolonged crisis that were characterised by balance and rationality.

“It is also worth noting that President Pezeshkian expressed, during the protracted crisis, positions and statements characterised by balance and rationality, stances that cannot be ignored at this delicate juncture,” Gargash said.
