Two phases, 80km, 72 bridges, 17 tunnels and a capacity of 24,000 vehicles per hour… here’s how the RTA’s mega road project will reshape travel between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah
Dubai: The new Fourth Corridor project in Dubai extends from Al Faya Road in the emirate of Abu Dhabi to Al Shanouf Road in the emirate of Sharjah, with a total length of approximately 80km, and is being implemented in two phases.
The project supports logistical transport and passes through several key landmarks and areas, including Al Maktoum International Airport, Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, the Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Etihad Rail line, in addition to a number of residential and development areas. According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the project includes the construction of 72 bridges, 17 tunnels, and 45 culverts for stormwater drainage.
First stage
The first phase of Al Shanouf Road in Sharjah extends to Dubai-Al Ain Road, with a length of approximately 30km, and includes the construction of a bypass road consisting of 12 lanes in both directions, with a capacity of up to 24,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The phase contributes to reducing travel time from 35 minutes to 14 minutes, by up to 60%, and serves about 600,000 people, and its cost is estimated at about Dh3.5 billion.
The first phase includes the construction of approximately 55km of surface roads, 2.5km of tunnels, and 21km of bridges and ramps.
The expansion of the Dubai-Al Ain road from three to four lanes in each direction, between the intersection of Emirates Road and Lehbab Road, also includes the development of four major intersections.
Phase Two
The second phase extends from Dubai-Al Ain Road to Al Faya Road in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, with a length of 50km, and includes the implementation of roads with a capacity of 12 lanes in both directions, with a capacity of up to 24,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
This phase contributes to reducing travel time from 50 minutes to 24 minutes, by 52%, and serves approximately 3.1 million people.
The second phase includes the construction of approximately 190km of surface roads, 3.5km of tunnels, and 157km of bridges and ramps.
