India eye series-clinching win as New Zealand fight to stay alive

India will look to clinch the five-match T20I series when they take on New Zealand in the third match in Wellington on Tuesday, with the visitors carrying a 2-0 lead and momentum firmly on their side.

Having won the opening two matches against the runners-up of the 2026 T20 World Cup, India have put themselves in a strong position to secure the series despite missing pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Another victory would give India an unassailable advantage and leave New Zealand with little room for error in the remaining two games.

India’s recent performances have underlined the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. After becoming the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title, India endured a difficult run, losing a series in Ireland and subsequently in England before drawing 2-2 against the West Indies at home.

However, the team has responded well in New Zealand, winning both matches despite limited preparation time and conditions that have traditionally offered assistance to pace bowlers. India have also won nine of their last 10 T20Is against New Zealand, a record that will further boost their confidence heading into the Wellington contest.

New Zealand, meanwhile, will need to find solutions quickly after falling behind in the series. The hosts have lost their last two home series against India and will be keen to avoid another series defeat on their own soil.

Their task has become more challenging with Matt Henry ruled out of the remainder of the series, while Lockie Ferguson will miss the third T20I. Henry bowled just two overs in the previous match before being withdrawn with an eye on commitments across the other formats. New Zealand have Adam Milne and Blair Tickner available as pace options, while Kyle Jamieson is expected to feature in Wellington.

The hosts will also need their spinners to maintain their effectiveness against an Indian batting line-up that has shown the ability to recover from difficult situations. Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell have taken eight wickets between them in the first two matches, conceding 132 runs across 16 overs.

Santner, in particular, could prove crucial after claiming four wickets in the previous game. India’s recent struggles against finger spin make the contest an important test for the middle order, which will have to balance caution with the need to maintain a competitive scoring rate.

Tilak Varma’s approach against spin could come under scrutiny. The left-hander has scored at a strike rate of 76 against spin compared to 220 against pace in the series so far. While Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir have managed to attack the spinners more effectively, India will want greater consistency from their middle order.

Tilak, however, remains one of India’s most dependable batters in run chases. According to stats from CricViz, he averages 51.6 in T20Is when batting second, compared to 39.7 when setting a target. India have won all 12 T20Is in which he has remained unbeaten, while each of his 26 not-out innings in the format has resulted in a victory for his team.

Since the beginning of 2025, Tilak has accumulated 1,282 T20I runs at an average of 41.4 and a strike rate of 141.7 across 52 matches, highlighting his importance to India’s middle order.

India are also expected to retain their existing batting-heavy combination. With Ishan Kishan yet to recover fully, young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is likely to get another opportunity at No. 3. The team management has preferred to preserve the batting depth of its top five rather than introduce an additional bowling option at the expense of a specialist batter.

India have won 21 of their 33 T20I meetings with New Zealand, with the hosts registering 11 victories and one match ending in a tie. India’s record in New Zealand is also encouraging, with nine wins from 14 matches.
