Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State and the UAE’s candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, confirmed that the situation in Sudan is dire, noting that stopping the fighting would be her top priority if she wins the position.

Nusseibeh stressed the need to stop the fighting, provide protection for civilians and humanitarian workers, and establish a political process that reflects the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people.

Nusseibeh responded to a report in Politico’s National Security Daily newsletter on Friday, regarding Sudan’s attempt to obstruct her efforts to assume the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Nusseiba emphasised the importance of holding the Rapid Support Forces accountable for their transgressions, stressing her support for the work of the United Nations fact-finding mechanisms.

She pointed out that the independence of the Secretary-General is a fundamental pillar.
