Ericsson and Telia recently enacted the next stage of their 6G development plans. The companies have begun field trials of the technology which they believe could put Sweden at the forefront of the next-generation systems.

The companies believe their research will deliver the AI-ready infrastructure Sweden needs to be a global force in providing secure, digital equipment as they work towards commercialising 6G in the 2030 to 2032 timeframe.

Anders Olsson, head of Telia Sweden, explained the 6G development is being steered by “the needs of society and businesses” and would “contribute to a more secure and competitive” nation.

The companies are lining up trials of coverage, signal performance, uplink capacity, reliability and latency.

Ericsson is employing technologies focussed on the upper 6GHz band which could form part of future 6G standards.

Future testing is likely to cover the 6GHz and 600MHz bands.

Patrick Johansson, head of EMEA at Ericsson, said Nordic nations are typically frontrunners in adopting fresh mobile technologies, a position he noted is continued by the vendor’s work with Telia.

The companies established the NorthStar programme in 2023 to refine 5G for industrial and enterprise uses, and earlier this year turned their attention to 6G with the Digital Arena Sweden research programme.

Olsson emphasised the companies have broad research partnerships with industrial, academic and public sector entities.
