AT&T to offer SD-WAN capabilities with Cisco

AT&T Business recently made history by being the first major North American service provider to offer a quantum resilient SD-WAN service. The operator unveiled this the new capability in partnership with Cisco.

The mobile operator is positioning the service as a direct response to the long-term security implications of quantum computing.

The offering blends post-quantum cryptography into AT&T’s existing SD-WAN portfolio, drawing on the Cisco 8000 router to deliver what the operator describes as next-generation cryptographic defences for enterprise customers. Global availability for AT&T Business customers is slated for later this year.

The move reflects growing urgency around so-called “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, where adversaries capture encrypted data with the intention of decrypting it once quantum systems become more powerful.

AT&T Business framed the timing as a strategic imperative, arguing enterprises handling sensitive or regulated data cannot afford to wait for quantum threats to fully materialise before acting.

The mobile operator noted compliance expectations are becoming clearer. Governments are tightening post-quantum security requirements, particularly for finance, healthcare and the public sector, with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology having already published its first finalised post-quantum cryptography standards.

AT&T said its new service aligns with those NIST standards, helping enterprises stay ahead of regulatory mandates rather than scrambling to meet them after the fact.

The service will be part of AT&T’s broader SD‑WAN offerings, supporting enterprises as they modernise networks and plan for future security requirements.

Joe Petrocelli, VP of communication services at AT&T Business, stated quantum-related risks can no longer be treated as a distant concern for enterprises making long-term network decisions. “By integrating post quantum cryptography into our SD‑WAN offerings, we’re helping customers reduce their risk exposure and protect critical information for the future,” he stated.
