Dubai Police bust six-member virtual assets fraud ring, recover AED2.6 million

Dubai Police have arrested a six-member virtual assets fraud ring that swindled a victim out of AED2.6 million. The suspects lured the victim into a fraudulent cryptocurrency trading deal through an unlicensed exchange. The stolen funds included AED2 million in cash and AED600,000 in cryptocurrency.

Security teams from the General Department of Criminal Investigation identified and arrested the suspects. They also traced and secured the stolen virtual assets.

    Case details

According to Dubai Police, the incident occurred when the victim sought to purchase cryptocurrency using a large amount of cash. He turned to an unlicensed exchange to complete the transaction, where he met several members of the ring and agreed to proceed with the deal.

Dubai Police said the victim transferred his virtual assets to decentralised digital wallets designed to conceal the identities of their owners. Once the transfer was completed, the suspects seized the cash and fled. They deliberately exploited the complex and difficult-to-trace nature of virtual wallet transactions, believing their digital footprint would shield them from detection and arrest.

    Two parallel tracks

Immediately after receiving the victim’s report, specialised teams launched a comprehensive investigation on two parallel tracks. The first focused on field operations and evidence collection to identify and arrest the suspects. The second involved in-depth technical analysis to trace the precise movement of the virtual assets across the blockchain as they were transferred between digital wallets.

    Asset recovery

“The security and technical efforts resulted in the identification and arrest of the suspects in record time, despite the complexity of the case and the speed at which the digital currencies moved between wallets,” Dubai Police said. “Specialised experts successfully traced the stolen virtual assets and secured them before they could be transferred to other wallets or otherwise disposed of.”

Dubai Police reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their technical and technological capabilities in handling crimes involving virtual assets. This includes the use of digital analysis tools, technical tracking methods, and the integration of field investigations with specialised technical investigations, helping uncover emerging crimes and pursue those responsible.

    Verifying legal status

Dubai Police strongly warned the public against dealing with unlicensed individuals or entities offering digital currency trading services, particularly those making unrealistic promises of rapid and substantial financial returns. They stressed that verifying the legal status of virtual asset service providers is an essential safeguard before conducting any transaction.

They also urged the public to avoid cash-based cryptocurrency transactions with unverified brokers or unlicensed exchanges. Police called on investors to deal only with officially recognised entities to reduce the risk of fraud and theft.

Dubai Police emphasised that prompt reporting is critical to helping law enforcement trace and secure virtual assets. “The public is encouraged to report suspicious financial activities through official channels, with the assurance that all reports are handled with complete confidentiality,” they concluded.
