Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has strengthened its marine transport system by adding four new fourth-generation heritage abras to its fleet. Designed in accordance with the latest technical specifications and approved standards, this addition reflects the RTA’s ongoing commitment to developing public transport services, improving customer experience, and enhancing integration between different transport modes in the emirate.

Khalaf Balghazoz Al Zarouni, Director of Maritime Transport at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, affirmed: “This addition comes within the Authority’s efforts to advance the maritime transport sector as an essential component of Dubai’s sustainable mobility system. It supports the Emirate’s position as a leading global city for quality of life, tourism, and business, while enhancing its ability to provide diverse, safe, and convenient transportation options for both residents and visitors.”

Al Zarouni said: “The deployment of the new abras represents an extension of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to develop marine transport services and raise operational efficiency. This ensures a more integrated, comfortable, and safer travel experience for passengers, in line with the Authority’s strategy to provide innovative, sustainable travel solutions that keep pace with Dubai’s rapid growth.”

He added: “The new abras can accommodate 24 passengers each and have been designed according to the highest engineering and technical standards. They fully comply with the Dubai Design Code’s health and safety requirements, ensuring a safe, comfortable travel environment that caters to the needs of different segments of society.”

This upgrade will help boost the appeal of maritime transport, driving demand and supporting its vital role within Dubai’s public transport network. The design incorporates top security, safety, and environmental sustainability standards, earning certificates of conformity under approved Gulf standard specifications.

The Authority has introduced a comprehensive set of operational and service enhancements to raise service quality. These include redesigned seats and flooring, more efficient interior space distribution, and dedicated areas for people of determination, which improves ease of movement and ensures maximum inclusiveness and accessibility.

The new abras are equipped with smart systems and modern technology to elevate passenger experience and service quality. Features include digital screens displaying real-time information, safety content, and awareness messages. Additionally, electronic destination boards have been installed for the first time on this type of abra, allowing passengers to access operational details clearly and easily, thereby boosting operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

The Authority affirms that expanding its maritime transport fleet aligns with its vision to provide an integrated, sustainable transport network. This supports Dubai’s future smart mobility goals and elevates service quality for residents and visitors, further consolidating the Emirate’s status as a leading global model for modern, integrated transport systems.
