Dubai: Online insults and defamation can lead to imprisonment and fines of up to AED 500,000 under UAE law, according to a warning issued as part of the nationwide “The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness” campaign.

The campaign is urging social media users to think carefully before posting comments that could hurt, ridicule or offend others, emphasising that everyone is responsible for the words they share online.

The message was delivered through an awareness video published during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, observed annually in October.

Launched by the UAE Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC), the campaign aims to raise awareness of cybercrime and encourage safe, responsible digital behaviour across all segments of society.

    Think before you comment

The campaign encourages people to consider how their words might affect others before posting online.

It highlights the importance of using social media for constructive expression and the respectful exchange of opinions, rather than for personal attacks, mockery or offensive remarks.

The initiative also calls on the public to promote positive dialogue and mutual respect, helping to create a safer and more welcoming digital environment that reflects the UAE’s social values.

    What does the law say?

The campaign highlighted Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes.

Under the law, anyone who insults another person or attributes to them an incident that could expose them to punishment or contempt by others through an information network, information technology or an information system may face imprisonment and a fine of between AED 250,000 and AED 500,000, or either penalty.

The law also establishes an aggravating circumstance when the offence is committed against a public official or a person entrusted with a public service in connection with their duties.

The campaign stressed that online comments carry legal responsibility and that people should remain mindful of the consequences of their words.

    Promoting digital responsibility

“The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness” is a comprehensive campaign designed to educate the public about cybercrime, online fraud and the methods criminals use to exploit technological developments.

It also addresses the evolving nature of cyber threats, including the misuse of modern artificial intelligence technologies. Through its awareness activities, the campaign seeks to strengthen digital literacy, encourage responsible online conduct and help individuals protect themselves and others from cybercrime.
