UAE’s NCM records 2.0-magnitude earthquake in Abu Dhabi

A 2.0-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the UAE, according to the National Seismic Network of National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

The tremor occurred in Al Halah at 9.15pm UAE time on April 19 with a depth of 3.9km, according to NCM.

The latest event comes amid a series of minor seismic activities recorded in the region in recent months. On January 3, a 2.2-magnitude earthquake was reported south of Musandam at 10:43am UAE time.

Musandam lies to the south of the Strait of Hormuz and is mainly governed by Oman as the Musandam Governorate, with certain parts governed by the UAE, including Ras Al Khaimah and parts of Dibba.

Earlier, on December 28, a 2.9-magnitude earthquake struck south of Musandam at 4:44am at a depth of 5km, lightly felt in parts of the UAE but causing no damage.

On November 4, a stronger 4.6-magnitude quake was also recorded in the same region, with tremors felt across the Emirates.

Although the UAE is not located in a major earthquake zone, occasional tremors can be felt because of its closeness to the Zagros mountain range, one of the world’s most active seismic regions. With neighbouring countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Oman frequently experiencing earthquakes, minor shaking is sometimes felt across the Emirates.
