Dubai: Dubai Police affirmed that providing comfort and reassurance to the emirate’s residents and maintaining public calm and tranquillity are a top priority in their efforts to enhance quality of life and provide a safe and stable environment in which everyone enjoys comfort. They noted that vehicle noise is among the negative behaviours that affect community members’ comfort and conflict with the values of respect and community responsibility.

Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, explained that Dubai Police continues their efforts to control noise-causing vehicles across various areas of the emirate. “Monitoring operations carried out by specialised smart devices, alongside field enforcement teams, resulted in the impounding of 218 vehicles and the issuance of 518 traffic fines last October, as part of ongoing efforts to curb this phenomenon and enhance traffic discipline,” he added.

Brig. Juma bin Suwaidan revealed that Dubai Police is expanding the use of smart technologies to monitor vehicle noise violations by increasing the number of devices dedicated to this purpose and deploying them at additional locations across the emirate. “This contributes to raising the efficiency of monitoring and enforcement operations and enhancing the ability to detect violations and handle them more effectively,” he continued.

He also noted that the loud sounds emitted by vehicles, whether due to illegal modifications to engines and exhaust systems or wrong driving practices, do not only cause annoyance but also affect residents’ psychological comfort and cause sleep disturbances, especially among children, the elderly and the sick, which necessitates addressing these practices and limiting their negative effects.

    Strict measures

The Director of the General Department of Traffic stressed that Dubai Police will never tolerate drivers who deliberately cause noise and disturb residents’ comfort. He issued a warning to owners of vehicles that have undergone modifications or additions causing loud sounds, as well as to drivers of sports cars who misuse them by deliberately revving engines to produce loud sounds, or exploiting public roads and residential neighbourhoods for showmanship and making disturbing noises. Furthermore, he emphisised that owning a sports car or modifying it does not give its driver the right to disturb public tranquillity or affect residents’ comfort, and that Dubai Police will take strict legal measures against violators, up to impounding vehicles in accordance with applicable legislation, without leniency or exception.

    Penalties

Brig. Juma bin Suwaidan explained that the violation of driving a vehicle that causes noise carries a fine of AED 2,000 and 12 traffic points, while the violation of making changes to a vehicle’s engine or chassis without a licence carries a fine of AED 1,000 and 12 traffic points, and impounding of the vehicle for 30 days. This is in addition to AED 10,000 in vehicle release fees, in accordance with Decree No. 30 of 2023 concerning vehicle impoundment in the emirate of Dubai.

    Advice

Brig. Juma bin Suwaidan urged drivers to adhere to traffic rules, ensure exhaust systems are in good condition, refrain from making unauthorised modifications to vehicles, and avoid sudden acceleration and deliberately pressing the accelerator to produce loud sounds, while taking into account the nature of residential areas, especially during night hours. He stressed the importance of community members’ cooperation with the competent authorities and reporting disturbing traffic behaviours through the “Police Eye” service on the Dubai Police smart application, or by calling 901. He indicated that enhancing traffic safety and maintaining public tranquillity are a shared responsibility that requires everyone’s awareness and commitment to regulations and laws.
